MOUNT CALVARY CEMETERY
1685 National Road
Wheeling, WV 26003
Tombstone Rating: 1
When seeking exciting cemetery exploration, Mount Calvary should be nowhere on your list. After finding the doors to the cemetery’s “Bishop’s Chapel” locked, we scanned the uninspiring grounds, forced ourselves to the back of the property to check out the lackluster community mausoleum, then put the pedal to the metal and gunned our way towards escape.
While thanking our lucky stars that police do not regularly patrol graveyards for speeders, we noticed a little side drive and decided, against our better judgment, to check out where it led.
Although we wish we could tell you this decision led us to discover a hidden collection of beautiful tombstones, we cannot. What we did discover was an outdoor mausoleum, a flock of wandering wild turkeys and an absolutely stunning view of the mist-covered rolling hills of West Virginia. Those interested in an afterlife “room with a view” chose a lovely location, to be sure.
Sadly, the vista from Mount Calvary’s highest point is the cemetery’s greatest attribute. Your time will definitely be better spent at Greenwood, a mere stone’s throw down National Road.
