Bella Morte Rating: 2 Tombstones
Another in the list of closely-situated graveyards which radiate from the central hub of Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum in Cincinnati, St. Mary's, also known as St. Mary's New German Catholic Cemetery, shares in what appears to have been an epidemic of confusion and one-uppmanship in regard to cemetery names in the area (see St. Joseph Old and St. Joseph New Cemeteries).
This relatively small Catholic burying ground contains a number of very attractive monuments, several of which feature scenes drawn from the faith, as exemplified by the image to the left depicting a loving embrace between St. Francis of Assisi and the crucified Christ. Although the reality of such an embrace -- and the, shall we say, "mechanics" involved in achieving it -- would, no doubt, be rather gruesome, the sculptor has managed to make the scene curiously peaceful.
The image of Christ and St. Francis is not the only attractive memorial sculpture in the cemetery, however, there is one piece which stands out spectacularly among the others...an image so appealing that, even if it were the only one in the cemetery would still make St. Mary's worthy of being added to your graveyard itinerary when visiting the area.
Deemed by the proprietors of Bella Morte as one of the finest examples of all we seek in funerary art depicting human grief, this captivating sculpture of a veiled woman is unique to our explorations and may well be an original, as opposed to a stock item. Please visit the St. Mary's gallery page to view this stunning example of memorial art, and, when in the Cincinnati area, stop by to see her in person. And, by all means, don't leave your camera behind!
