Sunset Acre cemetery has been part of the Wood County Home property for over 100 years. For area persons who resided in the Home because they were in need of care or a place to live, the cemetery was usually their final resting place. Their graves were marked by marble headstones with a number as identification. The names of some persons buried here are located in local records, but no centralized listing of names and numbered graves exists. The headstones were removed in the 1950s to make it easier to maintain the grounds. While many were stored on site, others disappeared. Beginning in 1992, efforts were made to reclaim and restore the headstones. Many local people and organizations gave of their time to complete the restoration of this cemetery. The headstones were reset in April, 1998. The restored cemetery was dedicated on Sunday, May 24, 1998.

When visiting, don’t miss the opportunity to wander the adjacent halls of the old Wood County Infirmary and, of course, the Lunatic House.
