Bella Morte is a website established in 2006 to celebrate the beauty of cemetery art. We welcome the curious, the cautious, the fearful and, of course, those who already understand and embrace the beauty of the final resting places of those who have passed this way before us. Those who wait in shaded glens and sun dappled spaces to speak with us through histories carved in marble, granite and sandstone. We invite you to walk with us among iron-gated mausoleums, obelisks, mighty-winged angels and simple stones, each with their own story to tell. Each with a voice that speaks for those whose earthly tongues lie still yet whose legacies in stone still whisper to us: "I was here. I was someone."
Join us in our photo galleries where we share with you a taste of the beauty we have experienced in our travels to some of the most out- standing cemeteries in the United States and Canada. And please check back often as our galleries will continue to grow.
Our focus is primarily, though certainly not exclusively, on cemeteries in the Victorian garden tradition. We rate the graveyards we visit on a scale of one to five tombstones. Of course, we realize that tastes differ and our opinions are subjective; however, if you share our love of garden cemeteries, chances are we won't steer you wrong.
Although we have visited a rather impressive number of cemeteries to date, we have many yet to explore and will do so as time and finances permit. In the meantime, if your favourite cemetery is not yet featured in one of our galleries, please feel free to contact us to share your recommendations.
